Every day Edward Dadd watches the men and women who come to no. 6 Cook’s Alley to sell their stories to his employer Aubrey Taverner - who gathers their harrowing experiences with complete indifference. When his twin sister dies Edward finds himself being enticed by Aubrey Taverner into a world which fascinates him the suffocating atmosphere of Cook’s Alley obsessing him as he becomes unconnected to the world with no apparent past.
